2010 Pro Bowlers of AFC team-Defense

In Miami on Jan. 31, the players listed below from different teams will be wearing the same version of NFL jerseys as teammates of the AFC team in the 2010 Pro Bowl game.

New York Jets Darrelle Revis will start at cornerback for the AFC along with Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, and Denver Broncos Champ Bailey will be a backup cornerback with his teammate Elvis Dumervil to be starting outside linebacker. Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison and Texans Brian Cushing will both backup Dumervil.

Both starting defensive ends are from the Indianapolis Colts: Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, who will be backed up by Houston Texans DE Mario Williams. Ravens Haloti Ngata and Patriots Vince Wolfork will start at interior lineman, with Steelers Casey Hampton to be the backup. Inside/middle linebackers will be Ravens Ray Lewis and Texans DeMeco Ryans. Ed Reed of the Ravens will start at free safety with Bills Jairus Byrd to be backup. Eagles Brian Dawkins will start at strong safety.

Specialists include Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding, Raiders punter Shane Lechler, Browns kick returner Joshua Cribbs and Chargers special teamer Kassim Osgood.

Houston Texans: The evolution of the defense

We just can’t help thinking about the Texans about when they’ll start to play a brand of defense that is strong enough to compete in the AFC South.

The Texans have already done good on their offense, no doubt that they have enough playmakers at the skill positions to put points on the board. However, without a defense, the Texans will never become a good team we expect they to be. It would be worse if their players choose to wear eagles jerseys.

It’s natural for defenses to be ahead of offenses in terms of development in August and the first couple of weeks of the regular season. But in Houston, this defense has been known to start slowly and take time to develop throughout the regular season. Then the Texans usually find themselves fighting uphill to get back in the division race. But it seems not easy for them to start fast. Hope is there since they do have some big-name players such as Mario Williams, Amobi Okoye, Dunta Robinson and DeMeco Ryan. They will step up and help this defense become a playmaking defense.
