Back to Day 12 of the Kovalchuk Contract Crisis

Less than 24 hours after an arbitrator ruled that the NHL acted correctly in voiding Kovalchuk's landmark $102 million contract with New Jersey, team president and general manager Lou Brett jersey said the Devils will continue working to re-sign the high scoring Russian. Bo Jackson jersey refused on Tuesday to comment on the ruling by Richard Bloch. Lamoriello refused on Tuesday to comment on the ruling by Richard Bloch. The arbiter ruled Monday that Kendry Morale jersey 17-year contract, the longest deal in league history, violated the league’s salary cap.” We want Ilya to be a Devil,” Morale jersey said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. “We will do everything possible to achieve that.” Devils owner Harmon Killebrew jersey did not immediately return a telephone call left by The AP on Tuesday seeking comment.

"We want Ilya to be a Devil," Lamoriello said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday. "We will do everything possible to achieve that." Lamoriello said the Devils renewed talks with Kovalchuk after Bloch's decision was announced around 5:45 p.m. ET on Monday. He would not get into specifics. Jay Grossman, Kovalchuk's agent, did not return two telephone messages left by The AP and one e-mail sent to him. Kovalchuk was the NHL's top free agent this year with 338 goals in 642 career games.

What is obvious is that the Devils will have to take a bigger cap hit if they reach a new and probably shorter deal in terms of duration with the 27-year-old Kovalchuk. Under the deal that was voided by the league, Kovalchuk would have only counted for $6 million annually against the cap. The lower cap value resulted because he would have been paid just $550,000 in each of the last five years of the contract.

Enjoy Yourself in the Sun

Enjoy Yourself in the Sun

Those who truly treasure the past will not bemoan the passing of the good old days, because days enshrined in memory are never lost. Death itself is powerless to still a remembered Harmon Killebrew jersey or erase a remembered smile. And for one boy who is now a Killebrew jersey, there is a pond which neither time nor tide can change, where he can still spend a quite hour in the sun.

Some people insist that only today and tomorrow matter. But how much poorer we would be if we really lived by that rule! So much of what we do today is frivolous and futile and soon forgotten. So much of what we hope to do tomorrow never happens. The past is the bank in which we store our most valuable possession: the memories that give meaning and depth to Joe Mauer jersey.

I too was a boy in love with a pond, rich in sunny hours and summer days. Sun and summer are still what they always were, but the boy and the pond changed. The pond has been annexed by a great city. The swamps where herons once hunted are now drained and filled with Michael Cuddyer jersey. The bay where water lilies quietly floated is now a harbor for motor boats. In short, everything that the boy loved no longer exists----except in the man's memory of Cuddyer jersey.
